I took a poll with my mom tribe of thousands of plus-size moms and listed the following according to my experience and their recommendations.

Side Note: I will say that babywearing is a game-changer for sure! Of course, every baby is different so whether or not a baby carrier works with your little one will depend on the baby but most babies LOVE to be held close to you.

Benefits of Using Plus-Size Baby Carriers, Wraps and/or Slings

• Baby wearing promotes parent-baby bonding.
• Great way to soothe baby and get a few things done around the house.
• Help keeps the baby quiet and from crying.
• Allows you to breastfeed while carrying the baby.
• Also, great for when you’re out and about. . . Not sure how much you’ll be out due to the pandemic, however, it’s great for when you do get a chance to.
• Allow both mom and dad to carry the baby.
•  Acknowledged as “hip-healthy” products by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.

Every plus-size parent is also different so choosing the right one will depend on a few different things.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Baby Carrier, Wrap and/or Sling for Plus-Size Moms and Dads

Style

Carrier

• Baby carriers are structured and have padding, buckles, waistbands & shoulder straps.
• May require an infant insert.
• Super easy to put on & take off.

Wrap

• Baby carriers are usually a long piece of soft & stretchy fabric that is wrapped around your body.
• Requires more of a learning curve than the other two styles. 
• Can also be used a sunshade or nursing cover.

Sling

• There are 2 different options that either require a ring or have to be tied.
• Most only use one shoulder – not both shoulders like the two other styles
• Can be worn on the hip once the child grows older.
• Easier to put on & take off than a wrap.
• Can also be used a sunshade or nursing cover.

Fabric

Preferably, you will want the fabric to be breathable. Depending on which plus-size carrier, wrap or sling, you’ll want to determine how thick or thin the fabric is. If you choose a wrap, the stretchy, breathable thinner fabric is ideal however, it really depends on your preference and your location. 

We live in South Florida so I like plus-size baby carriers, wraps and slings that are cooler for me and the baby. If you live somewhere that gets cold, you may want to consider a thicker one or you could choose any one of them and dress the baby accordingly. 

Great Fit

• Adjustable. Can it be adjusted to fit your size? Not all baby carriers, wraps, and slings can be adjusted to a larger size however, this list will give you the best ones that fit plus size moms the best!
• Does it offer an extender to fit larger sizes if needed? An extender is not always needed however, ErgoBaby & Liliebaby offer waist extenders that can be purchased.
• Extra parts. Do you need to use an infant insert for newborns? Some of the plus-size baby carriers will require a newborn insert, not the baby wraps or slings.
• Ease of Use. Easy to put on and take off? This is so important! You want to be able to put the baby carrier, wrap and sling by yourself. 
• Is it easy to breastfeed while wearing the baby? This is an added benefit for sure! Imagine not having to take the baby out when it’s time to feed the baby?
• Is it safe to carry a newborn in a carrier? It is very safe to carry a newborn in a baby carrier, wrap, or sling. You’ll want to check the specifications to confirm.
• Comfortable. Do baby carriers come in different sizes? Some of them come in different sizes and others are widely adjustable. 
• Which positions can you carry the baby?  It varies. These are the positions that most offer: front carry (inward), forward-facing, back carry, newborn carry, on the hip.

Where to Buy

So when I had my daughter, I was totally clueless about which baby carrier to get. Plus, I’m a bargain shopper through and through (basically, I’m not about that full-price life). So, I hit up Facebook Marketplace, and lucky me – I found the plus-size baby carrier of my dreams! I still have it to this day, and it’s been a lifesaver.

The list I’ve put together below is super helpful (seriously, I wish I had this back when I was looking), but if you’re anything like me and love a good deal, definitely check out your local thrift stores, Facebook Marketplace, Whatnot, eBay, Poshmark, or Mercari. You’d be surprised at the deals you can find. I’ve run across baby carrier that are brand new and barely used.

Baby Carriers: Plus-Size Baby Wearing

I have been using this for a while now and have had no problems. I spent quite some time researching and searching for what I wanted and this has lived up to all the boxes I wanted ticking. Hip healthy, Supportive and comfortable for me and baby.
My little girl is extremely comfortable and supported in it and either falls asleep or looks round in wonder as we go for our daily walks.
It is extremely comfortable and supportive for me to wear even for long periods of time. The extra venting is a god send as it can get quite warm with the body heat build up.
My only design complaint is about the hood as there is nowhere to store it when it is not in use without affecting another design aspect such as opening the vent, and being able to roll and fasten the vent neatly away.
Overall I would highly highly recommend this baby carrier. You feel like your baby is safe and comfortable, and YOU feel comfortable. I’ve also had compliments from other Mums who I think wish they had spent a bit more and got the same.

I have a 1 month old and so far he loves it! Last 2 times I’ve used it he has passed out. I had an easy time setting it up to fit me, but I can see why it could be a bit difficult for people who try without reading the instructions.

Absolutely love this carrier. Super easy to put on and clip baby in. I have the Boba wrap also and I get anxiety trying to put my baby in it. This carrier eases my anxiety, so easy and relaxing just doing housework with baby sleeping in it.

Babies are dang expensive but if you can afford to spend a little extra on a nice carrier, you won’t regret it. After going through some cheap hand-me-down carriers, I just ended up frustrated, sore, and carrying my child. When we finally bit the bullet and got an Ergobaby, our lives changed. We were able to get out of the house more and I was able to strap in baby and get work done. This honestly may have saved me from having a mental breakdown.

Wraps: Plus-Size Baby Wearing

Literally the best baby wrap out there! My daughter can be having a crying fit (she’s currently 2 months) and as soon as l put her in the wrap, *BOOM* she’s content and ready to sleep!! Mommas, l fully recommend this!
The support is there and it’s pretty easy to put on.

Easy to get on and out baby in and out off, only carrier baby doesn’t fuss or cry to get out of.

I like this more than I thought I would. Easy to put on and comfortable to wear. My only issue is forgetting how to easily get the fabric back over her after one side is on. When I do it right it’s really easy.

Slings: Best Plus-Size Baby Wearing

Love love love this ring sling! I only wore my middle child for a short while so I was determined to babywear my 3rd for much longer, especially since now I have a big kid and a toddler to keep up with as well. I’ve had my eye on this sling for a while but kept trying to talk myself out of it because of finances and make my moby wrap or baby bjorn work for us. I finally wised up and bought it — I feel like a wasted 3 months in not buying it sooner!! This sling is 100% worth the investment. The fabric is beautiful and lightweight which I appreciate so much in the Arizona heat. It’s so helpful having the tutorials on YouTube to get the sling adjusted properly and the customer service could not have been better! Anne took the time to chat with me a bit about positioning and is so sweet and personable! I will be buying this sling for or referring to all my mama friends from now on! LOVE this sling. I have tried many & this is the easiest by FAR. Material is breathable and easy to maneuver. If you’re worried about the price, you’ll end up saving by getting just this one instead of experimenting with others like I did.

My little boy loves being carried in his sling and now I have the ability to get things done at home. It has taken a lot of practice to get baby wearing down. I wish the aling came with better instructions and tips, but YouTube helped a lot.
