This will be our fourth summer doing camps in Fort Lauderdale, and honestly, it feels a little emotional. She’s growing up fast, and these summer memories — the friendships, field trips, silly camp songs — they’re becoming part of her childhood story.

It’s non-negotiable.

My husband and I both work, so while we do try to squeeze in a little travel, we also need a space that’s safe, affordable, and fun — somewhere she can thrive, not just be “watched.”

Side Note: No matter which summer camp you choose, register early. Many Fort Lauderdale camps fill up fast — especially the affordable and high-demand ones. Early registration gives you the best shot at securing a spot (and sometimes even saves you a few dollars with early bird pricing).

Free Summer Programs in Broward County

Okay, I’m not gonna lie… truly free summer camps in Broward County are pretty rare.

Most summer camps come with a cost, but there are a handful of programs that offer scholarships, financial assistance, or special funding that can significantly reduce the price — and in some cases, make camp completely free for qualifying families.

The key is knowing where to look and applying early. Each program has its own eligibility requirements, income guidelines, and application process.

You won’t find a huge list of completely free options, but there are a few opportunities worth exploring if you’re willing to apply for scholarships or assistance programs. A little research upfront could save you hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars over the summer.

Here are the summer programs that I personally know of:

1 – Broward County School Summer Program 

While the Broward County Schools summer program (and just in case you’re wondering . . . yes, this is different from the Fort Lauderdale summer camp program) may be ideal for some families, it is not for many of us. 

The Summer School program is only about a month long and only 4-5 hours a day. It’s also more for students who need academic support (ie. kids who didn’t pass the F.A.S.T testing, etc)

This isn’t ideal for most parents because the Summer break is about 2.5 months long and most of us work 8 hours (or more). I noticed there are some locations/programs that offer aftercare but not all do.

You’ll definitely want to take this into consideration before you decide which summer program in Broward County is right for you and your lil one.

If you’re anything like me, you want your child to have a fun, enriching summer without blowing your entire budget in the process. Thankfully, the City of Fort Lauderdale offers an affordable summer camp that won’t leave you stressed when it’s time to register.

Their program offers tiered pricing and sliding-scale fees based on income — so make sure that you ask.

2 – City of Fort Lauderdale Summer Program

The City of Fort Lauderdale summer camp covers a range of interests from sports and outdoor exploration to arts and culture, all while providing an environment that encourages our kiddos to build friendships, develop their skills, and just have an all-around great time while on summer break!

And let’s not forget that the City of Fort Lauderdale offers scholarships for those families that may need a little financial help. Because, let’s face it, every child deserves a magical summer, regardless of their circumstances.

I found out about the City of Fort Lauderdale Summer Camp from one of the moms that go to my daughter’s school. This was a godsend because I didn’t know what I was gonna do for the summer.

3 – Kimlings Academy of Martial Arts Summer Camp

This will be my daughter’s 3rd year at Kimling’s and we both LOVE IT! I’m not gonna lie, I was apprehensive at first because my daughter had never spent time away from me [in an afterschool or summer camp setting].

As a mom, I can tell you that Kimling’s Academy Summer Camp is an amazing choice for the kids. They have the chance to strengthen both their minds and bodies – it’s not just about the karate, but also the lessons they learn along the way. The summer camp is packed full of fun with so many activities and outings.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, YMCA, really? It’s been around forever! But let me tell you, it’s an institution for a reason. We all know the song, but the YMCA is so much more than a catchy tune. It’s a place where community comes alive.

I love how the YMCA promotes inclusivity and diversity. It’s a place that welcomes everyone, regardless of their background or abilities. This gives me peace of mind knowing that my kids are growing up in an environment that reflects the real world – diverse, inclusive, and respectful.

Their commitment to community service is something I value dearly as a parent. They regularly organize events and activities that give back to our community.
